If you have a look at the main page, you'll see Google signed in as a member, and I've seen Facebook listed there as well. What does that mean? What makes it even more interesting are these two articles that I discovered today:

http://www.technologyreview.com/featured-story/428150/what-facebook-knows/

...in the last two years Facebook has begun to track activity elsewhere on the Internet, using an addictive invention called the "Like" button. It appears on apps and websites outside Facebook and allows people to indicate with a click that they are interested in a brand, product, or piece of digital content. Since last fall, Facebook has also been able to collect data on users' online lives beyond its borders automatically...

The forum recognizes when google search engine bots visit, but not sure about the Facebook - maybe they are looking at the site to.

Well have you noticed on google, Facebook etc that the adds are 90% of the time things your interested in..

The site is basically talking to your computer and searching your 'cookies' for recently visited sites.. They say there increasing the users enjoyment..

More like increasing the hole in your wallet and computers protection...

Another reason why the only Facewaste account I have is under a dodgy name and I have no personal info on it.

People are going to get their arses burned with all of this one day.

Don't create accounts with the social stuff if your scared.

When u create an account with these read the disclosure first. Your phone/internet/ telco knows more about you than anybody else.

Excepting the ATO and Visa, my bank knows more about me than anyone else.

Viruses don't favor fancy names.. As soon as you've logged on the sites are searching your CP.

I recommend a blocker as posted above.

AVG are also one of the best virus protection systems you can get IMO..

Well I use f/fox which has this anti tracker addon called Ghostery among others and one wouldn't believe what sort of chit some website are up to.

Edit: What is really funny that the very website advising/giving advice how to avoid tracking itself uses 11 trackers on said page.

Pretty pathetic.

IE9 has tracking protection as well and I have it turned on for most sites. Some Youtube and Flash ads seem to be the most common way for trackers to collect information, as these are always blanked out on sites that have tracking blocked.

Some sites also allow federated authentication. I learnt this in depth on a recent lync and sharepoint admin course.

It allows authenticated users from one provider (MSN,Facebook,AOL,Google) to use those credentials to authenticate on other resources. Its like kerberos.

I don't use it as while it is probably convenient for people, you are allowing the trackers to use the logged in users details on the other site.

Bad for corporate networks, mmmmkay.

Information is king, and these days with people using social media thinking it is doing them a world of good, one day they will wake up naked, condom hanging out their arse and the Facebook like thumb looking at them with a big smile on its face...
