cairnsGU Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 Hi there peoples.... I thought i would let you guys no how suckie my easter was......No patrol in the garage...was going to head out to Chilligoe, http://maps.google.c...Queensland&z=10 Last week the motor let go, It had 203 000km's and full Nads fitted. Damn shame as I love this rig and i've been saving as hard as possible to buy another house. Thanks NISSAN lol. Thankful that it didn't happen out on my trip tho.. The motor is currently being rebuilt , Total engine rebuild including new head. All pistons had cracked and piston three had a hole in it. If your interested i cant post some photos and hopefully i get it back tomorrow , Please god let me get it back tomorrow lol By the way it cost me $7,200 Cheers Dan
Rumcajs Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 I've got a question in regards to the engine rebuilt, are you getting OEM pistons or OEM rebuilt kit again or aftermarket HD/forged whatever they call them? I'd appreciate if you could upload a close up photo of the piston in question. Also given the distance traveled is/are the injection pump and injectors going to be rebuilt/serviced. I've been watching this ZD30 grenading with interest for a while as I'm trying to see correlation between either the cheap skate parts used during the production or fuel system contributing heavily to this failures. It seems like the cooling system design doesn't help either given that most failure occur at no.3 or n.4 piston. Cheers
cairnsGU Posted April 11, 2012 Author Report Posted April 11, 2012 Yeah they are using acl rebuild kit. I can post some photos when i get it back as there going to save the pistons for me. One very noticable issue was the manifold extremely restricted on cylinders 3 and 4. I had injector pump tested and no issues found. Very well know diesel place up here has informed me that they do atleast 1-2 engine failures a week and reckons to date they have never seen failure caused by injector pump. From what they have noted being shit pistons and restrictions in manifolds from buildup. They also noted that the injectors and pumps are quite good on the zd30. So we have gone with only new injectors and glow plugs.....Dan Rumcajs 1
Rumcajs Posted April 11, 2012 Report Posted April 11, 2012 Next question would be than how long ago have you fitted the NADS, and did you ever cleaned the intake? Cheers
cairnsGU Posted April 12, 2012 Author Report Posted April 12, 2012 I only fitted nads in under 10,000km's. They said intake on 3 & 4 were extremelly restricted. Looking at piston 3 & 4 have a large buildup of carbon ontop of them and the others a clean. Piston 3 being the worst buildup and is also the piston that failed. Dan
Nutta Posted May 3, 2012 Report Posted May 3, 2012 Hi, my first post! I think the problem is the exhaust gas return thats coking the back section of the manifold although some say its the maf playing up, if that was the case all pistons etc would be coked? The egr returns in those rear # 3 & 4 pistons. My thoughts anyway. So you bought the truck new and fitted nads inside of 10k? If thats the case mines got no hope with nads being fit at 80k, and its now got 176k on it, so its always in the back of my mind, is it going to blow!!?? I've been checking out the new 3.2 td ranger 6 speed auto, as much as I'd love a new patrol the 4 speed auto and crumby 3.0 whilst towing just doesnt cut it! If they bought out a dual cab auto patrol with a decent tray and tdi to match id be in! Anyway, good luck with it! Edit. Looking at the date you should have it back on the road? So how is it? I often wondered at buying a shot engine and having it recoed with port/polished head, balanced etc, i wonder if that would ad more power. Cheers
mikegq Posted May 3, 2012 Report Posted May 3, 2012 Spewing mate, such a shame those things blow ups like its going out of fashion Hopefully once it's done it stays that way
gottheshits Posted May 4, 2012 Report Posted May 4, 2012 Hi Cairns, was the $7200 the final tally. Was it a tow in drive out build or did you do some work yourself ( motor extraction etc). Cheers
cairnsGU Posted May 8, 2012 Author Report Posted May 8, 2012 Hi Cairns, was the $7200 the final tally. Was it a tow in drive out build or did you do some work yourself ( motor extraction etc). Cheers Yes that was the final figure including new head. Towed it in and drove it out. Had a little trouble with it rough starting when cold for a few seconds. Replaced all fuel hoses and still no go. Took it back it to workshop and they couldn't find any leaks. They nipped up the injector pipes at back of pump and its started perfect the last couple of mornings. Hoping its fixed cause its so annoying. Real happy with the workmanship of the shop. Dan
cairnsGU Posted May 8, 2012 Author Report Posted May 8, 2012 My only issue now is that I live in north qld with so many places to go and I'm a little nervous to go anywhere lol. I was lucky it happend locally. Dan
gottheshits Posted May 8, 2012 Report Posted May 8, 2012 I know how you feel. I've got a couple of big trips coming up and its always in the back of your mind with a 3ltr. $ 7200 doesnt sound too bad for a full rebuild compared to some that have handed over alot more. Don't get me wrong its still a f#cload of money to shell out though and I'm not looking forward to having to do it at some point. Glad to hear you've got it all sorted though.
cairnsGU Posted May 8, 2012 Author Report Posted May 8, 2012 Yeah but it being a 2001. it being 11 years old. Hopefully i can get another 11 out of it. Thinking like that makes me feel better about the crap load of money i have spent on this beast. Dan
gottheshits Posted May 8, 2012 Report Posted May 8, 2012 Lol. Just think of it this way. Its a patrol and its worth it and no other vehicle looks as good on the road or in the bush. cairnsGU 1
admin Posted May 8, 2012 Report Posted May 8, 2012 I kind of have a budget to do 33's and 2 inch lift and snorkel but soooo in two minds as to weather I should do it to this 3.0 or spend big and get a 4.2.
gottheshits Posted May 8, 2012 Report Posted May 8, 2012 4.2s are for people with no sense of adventure.. Every day with a 3ltr is a big adrenaline rush, every noise rattle boost spike or fall really gets that heart a pounding. Jacket_1985, gottheshits, admin and 3 others 6
BradM Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 EGR is a bad, bad thing for a motor. Block it off.
cairnsGU Posted May 9, 2012 Author Report Posted May 9, 2012 EGR is a bad, bad thing for a motor. Block it off. I had blocked mine off before the engine blew up. Looking at my engine rebuild it was quite obvious to me why piston 3 & 4 failed as the restrictions in manifold for those cylinders was unbelievable. I made curtain that egr was blocked before they started the motor. Very relieved that no egr crap is going into my motor. Hope it helps with longativity tho. Dan
geeyoutoo Posted May 10, 2012 Report Posted May 10, 2012 Yeah but it being a 2001. it being 11 years old. Hopefully i can get another 11 out of it. Thinking like that makes me feel better about the crap load of money i have spent on this beast. Dan That's exactly how I looked at mine when it happened and after it was rebuilt, mines a 2000 I've had since new, and I would not part with it now, apart from that it's got too many bits on it.
SilverBullet Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 I wonder if that engine conditioner stuff that Subaru spray into their manifolds each service would help remove the carbon from the manifolds on these. I would expect it to totally remove everything but might be an idea for those who have just blocked off there egrs.
cairnsGU Posted May 13, 2012 Author Report Posted May 13, 2012 I kind of have a budget to do 33's and 2 inch lift and snorkel but soooo in two minds as to weather I should do it to this 3.0 or spend big and get a 4.2. I did exactly that a few months before. I couldn't justify the ridiculous amounts of money a 4.2 is.... Don't be afraid,
Keith Green Posted May 18, 2022 Report Posted May 18, 2022 2002 GU 3L - coolant disappearing over last 10 years...every mechanic failed to find it and couldn't fix the very lumpy start. Turned out coolant was leaking into a cylinder (damaged head) and the liquid had to be blown out the back before it would settle...obviously not enough to make it bust something. $13K repair quoted including a replacement secondhand head and overbore. What would it be worth with the dud motor? Entire car is in very good condition other than that...about 25OK kms I think (I don't have access to it).
