Toppy Posted May 14, 2012 Report Posted May 14, 2012 Hey guys, What would cause my front end to clunk when in 4wd? Noise is heard when driving forward. Almost sounds like the hubs aren't fully engaging. FYI my swivel hub seals need to be replaced pretty bad.
heyhey Posted May 14, 2012 Report Posted May 14, 2012 (edited) What type of hubs have you got, hubs are usually engineered to be the weakest spot in the drive line. Its not that hard to bugger standard ones and not really know Edited May 14, 2012 by heyhey
SilverBullet Posted May 14, 2012 Report Posted May 14, 2012 Could be a few things, as heyhey said hubs, cvs, diff, tailshaft. When does it make the noise? When driving, when first taking off? It is continuous, sound like a rotational noise?
Toppy Posted May 14, 2012 Author Report Posted May 14, 2012 I have the shitty standard auto ones. It sounds like hubs from what heyhey said as they have been gay lately like continuing to click after put back into two wheel drive and requiring to be hit with a hammer to come good again. It is when driving forward and seems t get worse the more I drive.
heyhey Posted May 14, 2012 Report Posted May 14, 2012 The shitty standard auto ones are most likely the cause. I ended up replacing mine when it started really clicking bad (talking bangs in the driveline) with the new Heavy Duty AVMs, no problems since (apart from installing them (my bad)).
Toppy Posted May 14, 2012 Author Report Posted May 14, 2012 Yeah that is a good way to desribe it actually, sounds like what mine was doing. Starting a new job soon and AVM's are at the top of my list after swivel hub seals. what problems did you have with the install if you dont mind me asking?
heyhey Posted May 14, 2012 Report Posted May 14, 2012 The hubs come in two parts and are held together buy there small tapered Torx key bolts, the tapers on them are so big and make such a large surface area lock with the hub body, when I tried to undo them I couldn't and broke all my torx bits, ended up cracking the shits and smashing them off with a 4lb hammer. Ended up finding out they have such a large taper to stop them coming out when you don't do them up full on tight, it would pay to read the instructions
dronus4x4 Posted May 14, 2012 Report Posted May 14, 2012 Yeah i replaced my auto hubs with DX manual hubs. Dunno if they were off a GU or GQ. Mine wouldn't disengage sometimes and would click.. It ended up just being some twat had filled the hubs up with grease instead of just lightly greasing them but i had bought the replacements by then so i swapped them over and sold the autos. Pretty easy to do (doesn't require a 4lb hammer) hahaha Only time it is inconvenient is when its raining and im going on a dirt road for a short time - i have to get out and engage and disengage but other than that they have been really good. Ohh and the time some numpty locked them while i was parked in the shopping centre carpark..
Ray! Posted May 14, 2012 Report Posted May 14, 2012 It would be interesting to know how many people have had problems with the auto hubs and haven't been manually locking them when going off-road vs those who do lock them manually when going off-road. Cheers Ray
Ray! Posted May 14, 2012 Report Posted May 14, 2012 Sounds like a good poll to start Ray! If I knew how. Cheers Ray
Toppy Posted May 14, 2012 Author Report Posted May 14, 2012 Well shortly after I got the GU I started locking my hubs manually and found it would go better, but then they would still click after being put into 2wd. So Dronus, is it worth pumping a little grease in to see if it fixes the problem to confirm it is the hubs?

The auto hubs should not be over-greased, just a light coating, as otherwise the auto mechanism cannot connect/disconnect properly. I'm trying to think of an analogy and the ony thing that comes to mind is a rifle bolt. Imagine if instead of just a light oiling the bolt, you coated the bolt heavily with grease, you'd find it pretty difficult to move the bolt in and out. Cheers Ray
Rumcajs Posted May 14, 2012 Report Posted May 14, 2012 (edited) I just modded mine auto hubs to be manual only in about ten minutes and never looked back. Cheers Edited May 14, 2012 by Rumcajs gottheshits 1
gottheshits Posted May 14, 2012 Report Posted May 14, 2012 I just modded mine auto hubs to be manual only in about ten minutes and never looked back. Cheers Hey Rumcajs do you reckon you could do a thread on it with pics..pleeaase.
GPSTI Posted May 15, 2012 Report Posted May 15, 2012 (edited) Removing the locking mechanism is easy. Take off the hub, flick out the auto ring mechanism (it will be obvious when you are looking at it) with a lever. Replace hub. Go and buy a cheap socket and weld an arm to it so you can keep it in your door sill, rather than having to hunt down the wheel wrench from inside the pouch in the back. Get dirty every time you have to get out and lock/unlock the hubs. Edited May 15, 2012 by GPSTI
gottheshits Posted May 15, 2012 Report Posted May 15, 2012 (edited) To go with this thread of clunks, does anyone else get a clunky ting - sounds to be coils resetting- moving front mainly (does it occasionally out the driveway) a lot while wheeling. Would this be due to coil caps knackered (correct term?). This is my first coiled 4wd so unsure. Is this normal. Will do it on small or full flex. Edited May 15, 2012 by gottheshits

Would this be due to coil caps knackered (correct term?). This is my first coiled 4wd so unsure. Is this normal. Will do it on small or full flex. I sometimes get that and only in the front. It's due to the coils turning/moving about in the seats and usually happens when I hit a mound too fast. It's nothing to worry about. Cheers Ray
Oldmate Posted May 15, 2012 Report Posted May 15, 2012 Yeah mine does that also when flexing a fair bit.

I degreased mine and lightly greased then to check them before I sold them.. you could try that.. also as others mentioned try locking the hubs manually when going off road. heyhey Posted May 15, 2012 Report Posted May 15, 2012 But if they are fcked already, time to get new hubs. I tried manually locking mine after they started going poo, and it was no good, damage was done
Toppy Posted May 15, 2012 Author Report Posted May 15, 2012 Yeah this is true. I'll just grab some AVM's and see how I go. Thanks heaps guys.
