Recovery Kit ideas.

I'm looking at putting together a better recovery kit now that the winch is on. I do regularly travel with Toyota's so I think it would be handy to have.

I'm tossing up between the Warn kit, the ARB kit and the one roadrunner Offroad sells.

Anyone had any experiance with any of these?

I'm guessjng at a minimum I will need

Another snatch strap

Tree trunk protector

Snatch block (pulley with greasable nipple)

Winch extension strap

Drag chain for trees.

Some more rated shackles.

I'm in two minds about upgrading to rated recovery points too. My telstra rear bar has some kind of dual pin things that I could use a bridle strap on, and I've been snatched a few times with the big asses hook on the front passenger side.

I bought this kit from Aldi, to which I added a snatch block I already had. Everything fits into that bag and it still has room for perhaps a tree trunk protector.

I have always found it handy to have a tomohawk in the bag aswell. If you get a kit try and get one thats got a bit of extra room in the bag. The arb ones look good but I dont know how they compare in price. My guess is dearer.

I'm in two minds about upgrading to rated recovery points too.

I'm not sure anyone makes rated recovery points. Lots of discussion about this elsewhere but my understanding (from the owners manual) is that the "hook" at the front is for "towing" only.

Snatching (particularly) and winching put a lot more stress on EVERYTHING. A difficult snatch can apply upwards of 3x the vehicle weight! What's the weak link? You won't know until it breaks!

Is this our first can of worms?

There is recovery plates that bolt to the chassis my old man has them on his patrol on the front and hooks on the rear

Ray, That shovel is good for maybe burying one of my shits, but your going to need somthing bigger than that to dig out my 4x4.

I have a mixed kit

• 2 x ARB snatch straps as I have found them to be the most wear resistant and longest lasting with much and crud on them
  
• 3 x 4.7t bow shakles, I have three for use when using the HiLift as a puller
  
• 1 x Ironman trunk protector, doesn't really matter what brand, just get the cheapest highest rated one you can
  
• 1 x Ironman winch extension strap, once again, doesn't really matter what brand, just get the cheapest highest rated one you can
  
• 1 x Snatch block, I have an ARB poly one for the rope in my winch. I also have a spare greaseable steel one that I have never used. Don't know why I carry it really
  
• A real shovel
  
• Highlift jack and a piece of wood for underneath the jack foot (so it doesn't sink).
  
• Drag chain
  
• And my lastest addition is a 2t chain lever hoist (silimar to a come-a-long or what ever those POS things are called).
  
• Recovery hitch in the rear
  
• Winch up the front
  

Pretty full on, but I have the space and have used every piece (minus the steel snatch block) multiple times, from recovering bogged Mercs for RACV (Royal Auto Club Vic) to recovering myself, to recovering my mates Cruisers, recovering rolled 4wds for down steep roadside embankments to even recovering my old mans 7t International Drott from track deep black mud.

I just need a ground anchor and there will be no recovery I cannot do (maybe)

Whoops I forgot I started this thread and put photos elsewhere.

I ended up getting dome gear from OL today (winch extension strap, drag chain, pulley, blanket and some recovery points) i be all ready got a good snatch strap and a few other bits and pieces like long handle shovel, ground anchor, and high lift jack. Forgot to get a tree trunk protector and bridle but I'll go back and get them..

Yeah recovery points are not rated, no one seems to do them. The ones I got were pretty hard core, I'll put some other pics up tomorrow of the block etc if I remember

I had the patrol hung up on the sills on a cross drain whilst out between Woods Point and Walhalla by myself, dug the whole thing away with a tent peg and my hands.

Don't forget the old faithful riggers gloves.. They will save many cut, Knicks and pinches while dealing with your recovery gear..

Only a few $$$ and avalible in many sizes from any good safety store..
