Bought a HF Radio. Just working out how to get it to Adelaide from Perth.

Once i get it here i need to work out how to install it - thinking about welding a bracket off my rear wheel holder / teloscopic light pole for the antenna base... Head unit should fit in the big hole in my roof console...

Should be Awesome...

Never been In the outback, so would like to know more about hf. Are they usefult long distance? Dx. :-)

I haven't got a HF, just a good UHF, but I have spent a fair bit of time in the outback, never on my own though. A lot depends on exactly where you are going, if you are alone then it is a must. You would be surprised at how many people you can rouse up on a UHF in very unlikely places. Many remote roadhouses have them for example. I have tossed up many times over the years as whether to buy one but it always falls tails so far.

For some trips the rental of a sat phone is worth considering.

Yeah as mentioned they are handy when out in very remote areas. I'm planning a Mega trip into some remote areas on my way up to QLD, and while its likely I'll be travelling with another family I'll feel much better knowing I can reach the rfds or other travellers.

The thing about these units is that they are very powerful and configurable. A normal uhf radio is 5watts. This one is around 130watts and has quite a sophisticated antenna. Lots of other cool features too.

Sat phones are great and very popular. It is probably a good idea for me to hire one for that trip too.

I've all ways wanted one of those kick ass grey antenna things of my own, since my army days.

I'll be joining vks737 and doing a course on how to use it... its a licensed radio spectrum and I'll keep it all above board.

You can have sat phone for as low as 700-800 AUD + prepaid calls, but I'm led to believe that HF units are in excess of couple of grand + yearly fees.

Is that right Dronus?

Sounds about right. A basic HF with antenna etc is likely to be around 3k new. License is $115 to get a call sign and legally transmit. You can get telephone calls over HF for $13 extra per month Inc 10 mins of calls.

I'd also like to know more about long distance communication. Perhaps someone in the know, or with experience, could start a "Communications" thread.

Repaired the damage (cause by my last trip to Glass House Mountains) to my RHS side step and remounted it.

I wish my sliders would hurry up. :)

Changed engine oil (was given drum of Havoline 10W-40 apparently contender for Nissan oil which Shell landed in the end. Anyone using this oil?) and oil filter from Western Filters also replaced drain plug with Fumoto drain valve. In the hindsight could/should get the standard unit this sticks a little bit out.

Cheers

I upgraded my headlights again. :D

I had 2.5 inch projectors in it before but now I've just fitted a pair of 3 inch projectors, led parker rings, indicators and Osram bulbs. For that amount of effort to fit these it probably wasn't worth the afford only look nicer.

I just be getting old cause I just came back from casablabla in the city for dinner and the amount of young things in short skirts might have resulted in me having a broken dipstick too...
